This undergraduate class is designed for students like you who are exploring health science majors and health careers. The course will help you assess your job interests, values, and behaviorial styles; explore professionalism and ethics in health care; learn about health-related majors and career paths; and create your own career and academic action plan.

LASk 1001 - Mastering Skills for College Success
Academic success involves more than being intelligent, and successful students know the importance of being an "active" learner. LASk 1001 was designed to offer students a survey of skills, strategies and ways of thinking that foster effective, "active" learning … and academic success here at the University. Skills explored include critical thinking, effective time & stress management, efficient study & test-taking strategies, use of library & campus resources, reading comprehension, communication & diversity, and learning styles & self-awareness.

Phar 1001 - Orientation to Pharmacy
From workforce issues and rural health to training opportunities and practice settings, this course covers it all. Participants will learn about the vision for the future of pharmacy, in addition to opportunities within a variety of settings that employ pharmacists. We will also provide "virtual tours" of various settings.

Phar 1002 - Health Sciences Terminology
This is an introductory course with a focus on analyzing and building health science vocabulary and terminology. The course will assist in adding 2500 words to students' recognition vocabulary. Do not be intimidated; this does not mean that you will be memorizing 2500 words, but rather that you will be utilizing a distributive methods of combining word parts to understand a variety of medical terms.

Phar 1003 - Nonprescription Medications and Self-Care
This introductory course will provide you with tools needed to get well faster, save money and explore your health. After completing this course, you will be able to recognize self-treatable health conditions, prevent illnesses, select appropriate non-prescription medications and communicate better with health care professionals.

Phar 1004 - Common Prescription Drugs and Diseases
This introductory self-study course provides information regarding the most frequently prescribed medications (e.g. Liptor) and conditions the medications are intended to treat (e.g. high cholesterol). You will become familiar with diagnostic criteria, disease complications, basic mechanism-of-action and side effects of medications, as well as direct-to-consumer advertising for the medications discussed. The diseases/conditions to be covered include: mental health (depression, anxiety, insomnia), migraine, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, asthma, allergy, peptic ulcer disease, arthritis, osteoporosis and sexually transmitted infections.

Work Abroad!
Working abroad is a great way to earn some money while visiting another country. Consider filling a semester or two with a great adventure abroad. A work abroad program will help you to develop intercultural communication skills and enhance interpersonal skills; problem-solve professional situations in an intercultural context; enhance critical thinking skills; ability to make decisions in uncertain situations, work independently and set priorities; become an effective member in a multicultural team; gain exposure to a variety of organizational structures and awareness of how culture impacts that structure; develop new skills and acquire more advanced knowledge in your field; explore a new field of work; improve language skills; network with professionals in your area of study; offer your time and energy to a community lacking resources; and become more comfortable with ambiguity and playing the role of ambassador. Check out GoldPASS for Jobs and Internships!
U of MN students have access to a bigger and better job database called GoldPASS.  This new online system (replacing CLA Link--so you'll need to re-register!) has been created by the U especially for its students.  It lists all kinds of jobs and internships and will be accessible to students in every college.  GoldPASS will be a great tool for your job search!  Not only will GoldPASS list jobs, internships, and volunteer positions, it will allow you to post your resume for employers to access!  Look for GoldPASS this semester at

Sports Medicine Internship
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is offering internship opportunities for college students interested in sports medicine. The University of Minnesota Athletic Medicine Program does not offer the curriculum required for students to become a Certified Athletic Trainers at the undergraduate level. However, this program does provide practical experience in sports medicine to a select number of students wishing to pursue careers in health related fields.

Certified Athletic Trainers are responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Student interns work with Certified Athletic Trainers, Team Physicians and other support personnel to provide general health care to the NCAA Division I athletes at the University of Minnesota. Professional aspirations of interns in this program have included physical therapy, medicine, massage therapy, chiropractic medicine, sports psychology and exercise physiology.

Students new to the program will work approximately 15-20 hours a week depending on sport assignment and season. Advanced interns work up to 25 hours a week and may travel with various teams. After completing a one semester volunteer orientation, students are paid a stipend each semester through the athletic department. Financial aid the work-study program may also be available for those who qualify. Students that can commit to the program for at least 1½ years are preferred.

Students interested in this program should contact the University of Minnesota Athletic Medicine Department at (612) 624-3344 for additional information. Applications are currently being accepted for the Fall and Spring 2008 semesters. The selection process will take place over the next two weeks, with some students having the opportunity to work the later part of this semester. Selections will be based on previous experience, grade point average and an interview process. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions.

"Student Experience" is the name and student experience is what you get. This organization wants to "better prepare students for the transition from the academic world into their chosen career." Student Experience helps college students interested in the helping professions gain work experience in their field of study by assisting special needs people with their physical and developmental care. Students are expected to commit to 12-15 hours weekly for at least two semesters. Starting wages are $6.50-$8.50 per hour with raises every 90 days.
