First Steps to Study Abroad
  1. Attend a First-Step Meeting (held daily in 230 Heller Hall)
  2. Set Goals and Prioritze (are you fulfilling major requirements? liberal education requirements? will you be working, interning, or volunteering while abroad?)
  3. Investigate Programs (Check out the learning abroad website for ideas)
  4. Academic Planning (find course descriptions and syllabi)
  5. Talk to your Departmental and Academic Advisers (at any stage in the process, disucss coursework and terms to go abroad that will work for you. Ask about collegiate and departmental scholarships, too)
  6. Apply Early (allow yourself plenty of time to complete the program application--deadlines range from three months to one year before the program start date)
  7. Apply for Scholarships (More than $500,000 in scholarships and grants are available for University of Minnesota students participating on international study, work, intern, and volunteer opportunities)
